Various Roof Cleaning Chemicals and Tools
Why is cleaning your roof important? Well to start with, cleaning is aesthetically good. It gives a great-looking, well-maintained home and does not induce a feeling that the house is not cared for by the people who live in it.
There are many items and solutions available in the market for roof cleaning. However not all are going to give you the optimum results. Some myths about roofing say that if shingles are having algae it is about time to get a new roof. Do some proper research, these green patches or algae which are known as Gloeocapsa Magma, just loves the chemical formulation of the shingles. The very fact that you have algae on your roof does not mean that mean that your roof is doomed and you need to shell out money in order to have a new one. But it certainly means that you have to act fast and ensure that the algae is removed else they will devour your roof.
Gloeocapsa Magma can be effectively removed using a simple sodium hypochlorite-based solution. This is by far the best product that can be recommended. There are not many products for roof cleaning which come even close to the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite-based solution. However a few other products are given as an alternative.
Another good solution is a mixture of bleach, water and TSP which can be obtained from a paint store to apply on your roof. However, excess quantities of this mixture are known to remove the gloss of your roofs. Bleach is the primary cleaning agent that ensures the algae and leeches are removed.
Apart from chemicals, you will require a number of other working tools to properly clean your roof. The list is long and we will discuss a few here -
A poly tank, the usual ones that you can get at a hardware store, for mixing the bleach, water and TSP mixture together is required. For home uses, a tank that will hold about 60 gallons of the mixture is enough.
You will need a clear hose about 150′ which will ensure that you can reach out to any nook and corner of your roof. Also required is a pump that can transfer the mixture out of the tank into the hose and out of the other end. At the other end you need a poly gun with fittings. Once you have all these, connect everything together and you are ready to start. For reaching out to the roof you will also need a good ladder.
